Are lab-created diamonds real diamonds?
Absolutely! Despite the fact that laboratory-grown diamonds are created artificially as opposed to within the Earth’s mantle – they are most definitely real diamonds. Also referred to as man-grown, cultured, cultivated, or lab-grown diamonds – they possess the same optical and chemical properties as natural mined diamonds. In fact, expert gemologists often cannot even tell the difference!
How laboratory diamonds are grown
Synthetic diamonds are known by a variety of names. Cultured diamonds. Cultivated diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds. No matter which term you decide to use, man-made diamonds are grown in controlled laboratory conditions that use modern technology to simulate the conditions found deep within Earth’s mantle.
Each laboratory-grown diamond is composed of carbon atoms which are arranged in the signature diamond crystalline formation. Possessing the same arrangement and composition of carbon as natural diamonds – they also have the same properties – both chemically and visually.
Man-made diamonds are created from either pure carbon that was extracted from cremated remains, hair, graphite or other carbon-containing material – or from small “seeds” of diamond. Modern technology provides methods that either add extreme temperature and pressure to the sample or that create a carbon deposition process to grow the diamond under strictly-controlled conditions. Once the diamond has been grown, it is then cut and polished by the same industry professionals and according to the same standards used for natural diamonds.

On average, a man-made diamond will cost approximately 30 percent less than a natural diamond that features the same size and characteristics. Durability and brilliance are equal when comparing synthetic diamonds to natural diamonds.
Don’t confuse diamond simulants to synthetic diamonds. Fake or simulated diamonds are composed of moissanite, cubic zirconia, YAG or natural gemstones. Unlike synthetic diamonds, simulated (fake) diamonds are not composed of carbon and do not carry the same characteristics as natural diamonds.
