The Science Behind Colored Diamonds - Heart In Diamond

Here is a short guide to how some diamonds get their color.

Pink/red

Pink and red diamonds receive their color from the extreme pressure and heat places up then by the Earth’s crust. These conditions cause the structure of the gem to reconfigure so that it absorbs green light, leaving it red.

Green

Green diamonds are incredibly rare. This is because they receive their color from naturally occurring radiation found in the earth's crust.

Yellow/orange

Nitrogen in yellow and orange diamonds makes them absorb blue light and reflect yellow.

Blue

When boron combines with the carbon in the diamond, it changes the gem so that it absorbs green, red and orange light.
