Diamonds didn’t become universally popular until the 1800’s, when supply and innovative polishing techniques were improved. The discovery of vast diamond deposits in South Africa turned the gem from a rarity, owned only by the most wealthy, to a jewel that was more affordable to the masses. However, diamonds have been a part of human history for thousands of years. Our word “diamond” comes from the Greek meaning “untamed” or “unbreakable.” Knowledge of diamonds began in India where they could be found along some of the major rivers and where they were used as gemstones and as an instrument to carve other tools.
